Summer and the sun are the best things in the world, but the sun has many negative effects. One of them is UV rays, which damage the skin. The days of sunbathing have come a long way, as many people are now more aware of the effects of the sun. I myself also avoid sunbathing these days and usually protect myself from the sun with clothes, but also always with sunscreen. The skin on the face in particular is exposed to the sun all year round, so face protection is always in order. But how and what kind of sunscreen should you use on your face? Is a foundation with a sun protection factor enough?

Sunscreen is often added too little. Too little sunscreen reduces the power promised by sunscreen and may not be enough. It is advisable to apply sunscreen on the skin of the face only 1.25 ml (EU recommendation), ie about 1/4 teaspoon. When the ointment is also applied to the neck and décolleté, it is a good idea to have about 2.5 ml of ointment, ie about half a teaspoon. Thus, a fair amount of cream can be applied to the skin to achieve the protection factor promised by the product.

Is a foundation with a sun protection factor enough to protect from the sun?

Today, many make-up creams have a low protection factor, often spf 10-15. However, this is a really low protection factor for use only in the Finnish summer. I recommend always choosing a sunscreen with a protection factor of at least spf30 for both face and body. Even if the foundation has a higher sun protection, it does not necessarily provide the protection it promises. Make-up is usually applied to the face a little less than cream. Foundation is not absorbed into the skin in the same way, so you don’t feel like applying a very generous layer on your face. For this reason, it is recommended to always add sun protection separately under the makeup, so that the foundation does not need to be dosed in such a large amount to obtain the protection factor.

However, a really good combo is to use both sun protection and sunscreen make-up cream together. However, I do not recommend relying solely on sunscreen.

Fortunately, there are a lot of sunscreens on the market today that can be used to choose the most suitable one for your skin type. The wonderful sunscreens I have tried under makeup are, for example, Bybin Day Defense Cream * , which is not too greasy and is also suitable for combination skin. Another really good sunscreen for a slightly drier skin type is Lierac’s Sunissime spf50 cream * , which moisturizes the skin under makeup.

Tinted sunscreens are easy to add to the face throughout the day

The sunscreen applied to the face in the morning no longer protects the skin of the face in the evening. It is a good idea to add sunscreen every couple of hours, especially when you are in direct sunlight. However, if you have added makeup on top of the sunscreen, adding sunscreen can cause inconvenience. However, tinted sunscreens work really well instead of make-up cream and are easy to add extra layers to your face throughout the day if needed. Alga Maris tinted sunscreens * are absolutely super, as they are matte-drying sunscreens that are also suitable for oily skin. Alga Maris tinted sunscreens are available with a protection factor of 30 and 50.

If you don’t wear a lot of make-up in the summer, it’s easy to add a normal sunscreen designed for the face to make-up-free skin during the day.
